EU Great Reset: conservative plan to regain sovereignty

Conservative think tanks from Poland and Hungary have presented an ambitious project to reform the European Union, intended as a response to Brussels' federalist plans. The document 'Great Reset: restoring the sovereignty of member states in the European Union,' prepared by the Ordo Iuris Institute and the Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC), was presented in Warsaw, Budapest, Brussels, Madrid, and Paris. This is the first step towards preparing a detailed proposal for changes to the European treaties.

A conservative alternative to federalists

The initiative, announced in September 2024 during a conference with the participation of the American Heritage Foundation, aims to support conservative and patriotic parties in negotiations over treaty reform. Instead of passively resisting the creation of a European superstate, the project proposes using renegotiation to reverse centralist tendencies and restore member states' control over the treaties.

A response to Brussels' federalist ambitions

The project is a direct response to the actions of Euro-federalists, such as the Conference on the Future of Europe, the report of the Franco-German expert group from September 2023, or the 267 amendments to the treaties adopted by the European Parliament in November of the same year. The project's authors warn that these changes – if implemented – will lead to the final loss of national sovereignty.

Moreover, Brussels institutions are already taking over the competences of member states, instrumentalizing the rule of law, forcing common debt, and abusing the interpretation of treaties by the Court of Justice of the EU. The 'Great Reset' project aims to counteract this by restoring states' ability to make key decisions in times of crisis.

Support and further plans

The project has already gained support from the Hungarian government, the Spanish party Vox, as well as part of PiS politicians and other right-wing groups in Poland. Talks are underway with Italian think tanks associated with Matteo Salvini and Giorgia Meloni, as well as with Portugal's Chega, Romania's AUR, and Germany's AfD. Soon, the project is to be presented in Rome and Lisbon.

Special attention was paid to migration policy. The report of MCC and the Hungarian Institute for Migration Studies, prepared in cooperation with Ordo Iuris, indicates that control over migration policy can already be regained without waiting for treaty changes. This is urgent, especially in light of the entry into force in 2026 of the EU migration pact, which – according to the authors – may deepen the existential threat to Europe.
