Candace Owens’ Attack on Erika Kirk: A Catholic Case Against Rash Judgment

In a recent live debate, Candace Owens vs. Andrew Wilson was asked directly whether she had evidence that Erika Kirk or Turning Point USA participated in the murder of Charlie Kirk. Her immediate denial — “I’ve never said they participated” — is a classic example of her evasive style. Yet a review of her podcast episodes reveals a consistent pattern of insinuation and character assassination that falls far short of honest inquiry. For a Catholic commentator who claims to uphold truth, Owens’ conduct is a grave scandal.

A Pattern of Insinuation

Owens has never explicitly accused Erika of murder, but she has repeatedly suggested complicity. She has called Erika “evil,” “complicit,” and “a manipulative psychopath.” She has implied that Erika and Charlie argued the night before his death, that Erika married him for power, and that she behaves suspiciously. In one episode, she even drew parallels between Erika and a woman convicted of murdering her husband. These are not innocent questions; they are calculated attacks designed to tarnish a grieving widow’s reputation.

The Motte-and-Bailey Tactic

When challenged, Owens retreats to a narrow, defensible position. For instance, she claimed that calling Mitch Snow “credible” only meant he was where he said he was. Similarly, when pressed on her “complicit” comment, she redefined it as “complicit in trying to fool the public.” This is a textbook motte-and-bailey fallacy: she insinuates the worst, then denies any wrongdoing when confronted. Such intellectual dishonesty is unworthy of a public figure, especially one who professes the Catholic faith.

The Catholic Duty to Avoid Calumny

The Catechism of the Catholic Church identifies rash judgment, detraction, and calumny as sins that unjustly harm another’s reputation. Owens has committed all three against Erika Kirk, a fellow Christian and a mother of two. Her relentless attacks have caused permanent damage to Erika’s good name in the eyes of millions. As Christians, we are called to support widows, not to slander them. The words of Exodus are a sober warning: “You shall not afflict any widow or orphan.”

Candace has consistently used her enormous platform to engage in all manner of rash judgment, detraction, and calumny, thereby causing permanent damage to Erika’s good name in the eyes of millions of people.

Owens’ actions also slander Charlie Kirk himself, implying he was foolish enough to marry a woman who never loved him. Either Owens has uncovered a sinister truth that Charlie missed, or she is spreading nonsense and committing grave sins. The evidence overwhelmingly supports the latter. It is time for Catholic commentators to hold Owens accountable and to defend the innocent.
