Bitcoin's network is set to split in two today as developer Paul Sztorc's long-promised "eCash" hard fork reaches its target activation point at block height roughly 964,000. The project, which has been building toward this moment since Sztorc first announced it in late April, copies the entire Bitcoin ledger onto a new chain and hands every BTC holder a matching balance of the new asset.
What's Happening?
Sztorc, a veteran Bitcoin developer and CEO of LayerTwo Labs, has spent years pushing an idea called Drivechains — a way to bolt sidechains onto Bitcoin without changing its base layer. After failing to win over Bitcoin Core's notoriously conservative governance process, he opted for a more drastic route: forking Bitcoin outright and shipping Drivechains on the new chain from day one. The mechanics are simple in concept. Anyone holding BTC at the moment of the split automatically controls an equivalent balance on the new eCash chain — hold 1 BTC, and you hold 1 eCash. The new network runs software that is nearly identical to Bitcoin Core, keeps the same SHA-256 mining algorithm, and resets mining difficulty to its minimum at launch to help attract miners. Layered on top of that base is the actual point of the exercise: seven Drivechain-powered sidechains, covering a Zcash-style privacy chain, a prediction market called Truthcoin, a decentralized exchange called CoinShift, an NFT platform called Bitassets, an identity system called Bitnames, and a quantum-resistant network called Photon.
The Controversy
The fork has drawn criticism well before today's launch, mainly over how it treats roughly half a million to a million dormant coins tied to Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. Unlike past forks such as Bitcoin Cash's 2017 split, which preserved every wallet balance untouched, eCash reassigns a portion of these long-dormant Satoshi-linked coins to help fund the project — a move critics have called a property-rights violation and an unsettling precedent, regardless of how symbolic or technically justified Sztorc's team says it is. Miner support has reportedly stayed thin in the run-up to launch, raising questions about how much hashpower — and therefore how much security — the new chain will actually have once it's on its own.
Why It Matters Beyond Crypto Twitter
This fork lands differently than earlier Bitcoin splits because of who's now holding the coins. A meaningful share of BTC in circulation sits with spot Bitcoin ETFs, corporate treasuries, and regulated custodians rather than individual wallets. Firms with large BTC holdings on their balance sheets — as well as ETF sponsors bound by prospectus language on how to handle forked assets — face decisions about whether and how to claim, custody, or disclose any eCash allocation, with tax authorities generally treating fork-derived airdrops as ordinary income once a holder has control over them. Existing Bitcoin holdings and the Bitcoin network itself are unaffected by the fork — BTC continues to operate exactly as before. eCash is a separate, optional chain that only matters to those who choose to interact with it.
What Happens Next
A coin-splitter tool has been promised to help users cleanly separate their BTC from their new eCash holdings, reducing the risk of accidentally spending one asset in a way that also moves the other. From here, eCash's fate depends on the usual forces that determine whether a fork survives: how many miners commit hashpower, whether exchanges list and support it, and whether users find enough reason to hold, trade, or actually use the new Drivechains rather than ignore the airdrop entirely.
