Vatican's China Gambit: Cardinal Parolin's Naivety Endangers the Faith

Cardinal Parolin's hopeful words on the Vatican-China deal ignore communist reality, risking the Church's freedom and mission. In a recent statement, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's Secretary of State, sought to justify the Holy See's provisional agreement with the People's Republic of China. His words, steeped in diplomatic optimism, paint a picture of increased freedom and a Church finally able to fulfill its divine mission. Yet, a sober look at the facts reveals a dangerous naivety that could have grave consequences for the Catholic faithful in China and beyond.

A Hollow Promise of Freedom

Cardinal Parolin asserts that the agreement aims to create conditions for 'greater freedom and organisation' so the Church can preach the Gospel. However, the Chinese Communist Party's history speaks otherwise. The state has consistently sought to control religious practice, not liberate it. The agreement, in reality, hands the government a tool to further subjugate the Church, stripping away the little autonomy it has left. The promise of 'good Pastors, recognised by the Pope and by the Chinese Government' is a thinly veiled mechanism for state interference in ecclesiastical appointments.

The Illusion of Peace and Contribution

The Cardinal also envisions Catholics contributing to China's prosperity and the agreement fostering peace. But what does 'contribution' mean under a regime that demands absolute loyalty? It likely means full integration into the Communist Party, a betrayal of the Church's independence. As for peace, the Chinese state's concept of peace is the silence of submission. The regime does not seek reconciliation; it seeks docility. This agreement will not bring peace to China or the world; it will embolden tyrants who see appeasement as a sign of weakness.

A Call for Clarity and Courage

The Vatican's approach seems to forget the lessons of history. Totalitarian regimes do not make concessions; they exploit them. The Church's mission is to proclaim truth, not to negotiate with those who suppress it. The faithful in China deserve pastors who will stand firm, not those who compromise with persecution. This agreement, wrapped in diplomatic niceties, is a step backward for religious freedom and a dangerous precedent for the Church's global witness.

The only peace Beijing knows is the docility of submission, the silence of the prisoner at the mercy of the jailor.

The agreement's promised benefits are mirages. Catholics in China will not gain freedom; they will lose it. The Church will not contribute to peace; it will be complicit in its own oppression. It is time for the Vatican to abandon naive optimism and adopt a stance of principled resistance, standing with the persecuted Church and the courageous voices, like Cardinal Zen, who have warned against this sell-out.
