Hamburg parents await answer from Rome: will the Church hear the Catholic voice?

Hamburgo arkivyskupijos (Vokietija) katalikų mokyklų mokinių tėvai jau beveik šešis mėnesius laukia atsakymo iš Romos. Jie kreipėsi į popiežių Levą XIV., prašydami sustabdyti arkivyskupo Stefano Hessės įvestas lytiškumo ugdymo gaires, kurios, jų įsitikinimu, prieštarauja katalikų tikėjimui. Šios gairės, pavadintos „Vyras, moteris, įvairovė“, nuo rugpjūčio 20 d. turėtų būti taikomos 15-yje arkivyskupijos mokyklų.

Parents' concern for their children's future

Parents united in the 'Children's Protection and Prevention Network' claim that the programs promote early sexualization of children and are based on assumptions incompatible with Christian anthropology. They emphasize that interactive methods are already applied in primary grades, cooperation with interested organizations is ongoing, and parents' right to excuse children from LGBT content is not clearly ensured. Furthermore, the program raises doubts regarding the recognition of different gender identities and the equal treatment of family models alongside Christian marriage.

Synodal 'dialogue' in practice

The parents say they initially tried to talk with the archdiocese. In December 2025, Archbishop Hesse met with family representatives, but the meeting brought no substantial changes. Then, in February, the parents appealed directly to Rome: a letter to Pope Leo XIV was handed over through the apostolic nuncio in Germany. In the letter, they asked to 'stop this initiative' and to help 'protect our children's faith and purity.' They also expressed concern about Catholic immigrants who, due to such programs, may stop perceiving the German Church as their home.

Almost six months later, there is still no response from the Vatican. Therefore, about two months ago, the parents filed a canonical complaint with the Dicastery for Bishops, now led by Monsignor Filippo Iannone. Archbishop Hesse has previously been at the center of controversial decisions: in 2019, he supported a book favorable to the blessing of homosexual couples, later called for reopening the discussion on women's ordination, and in 2021, after scandals of sexual abuse cases, he submitted his resignation, but the Vatican left him in office.

Principles of Catholic education

Catholic tradition emphasizes that the first right and duty to educate children belongs to parents, not to the state or activist groups. The Catechism calls parents 'the first responsible for their children's education' (CCC 2223). Sexuality education must be part of teaching virtue, chastity, and marriage, not a reflection of secular world fads. Therefore, a Catholic school must educate according to the Christian concept of the human person, not offer the same ideological experiments as secular institutions.

A Catholic school that is ashamed to educate Catholicly is just a more expensive secular school with a chapel.

Six months of silence from Rome raises serious questions about the reality of the Church's listening. If synodality is the vision of a 'listening Church,' then its credibility is measured not by conferences but by the willingness to hear those who ask that Catholic institutions remain Catholic. This case reveals a fundamental question: what is the need for a Catholic school if it teaches the same as the world? Parents who choose a Catholic school have the right to expect that it will teach in a Catholic manner, not impose an ideology contrary to their faith.
